This Sunday in Worship…

This Sunday we will consider the circumstances that made it necessary for Abram, and ultimately God, to intervene in the life of Abram’s nephew, Lot. Lot’s dreadful plight was a situation of his own making. Nevertheless, people who loved and cared for Lot went to extreme measures in order to rescue him and his family from danger and from evil. What were the decisions that led Lot to such a place of such evil? How did Lot respond to Abram’s rescuing him from captivity? What was the outcome of Lot’s life after the angels of the Lord delivered him from the destruction of God’s wrath upon Sodom and Gomorrah? Finally, how do we relate the story of Lot’s life and the answers to these questions to modern life? These questions and more are at the heart of Sunday’s message, “Rescuing Lot: When Circumstances Warrant Intervention.”

Sunday’s Sermon Text

  • Genesis 14:1-16
  • Genesis 18:22-33
  • Genesis 19:1-38
  • Luke 15:11-32

Meditate on these words from this well known hymn, “Rescue the Perishing”

Rescue the perishing,
Care for the dying,
Snatch them in pity from sin and the grave.
Weep o’er the erring one,
Lift up the fallen,
Tell them of Jesus, the mighty to save.

Though they are slighting Him,
Still He is waiting,
Waiting the penitent child to receive.
Plead with them earnestly,
Plead with them gently,
He will forgive if they only believe.

Down in the human heart,
Crushed by the tempter,
Feelings lie buried that grace can restore.
Touched by a loving heart,
Wakened by kindness,
Chords that are broken will vibrate one more.

Rescue the perishing,
Duty demands it;
Strength for thy labor the Lord will provide.
Back to the narrow way
Patiently win them,
Tell the poor wand’rer a Savior has died.

Rescue the perishing,
Care for the dying;
Jesus is merciful,
Jesus will save!

Food for Thought as You Prepare for Worship this Sunday

To what extreme are you willing to go in order to intervene in the reckless and/or destructive life of someone that you love and care about? What about the lost in general? Sometimes our best efforts at intervention fail. In such cases, are you willing to trust God to do whatever it takes to intervene in your loved one’s life? Are you prepared for the outcomes and response? When should you NOT intervene? Who will you trust and obey?

See you Sunday!
